Description
Amsterdam, Isaak Tirion, 1744. In-f° (30 x 44 cm) : [3] lvs; 111 double-page plates mounted on guards, numbered with pen or pencil (3 pl. on larger folded lvs, small spots). Modern binding : light brown threequarter sheepskin, grey paper boards imitating parchment, ribbed spine, brown sprinkled edges (scratches, spine and joints rubbed, corners dulled). WELL-PRESERVED AND COMPLETE COPY of the Dutch hand-atlas published by the Amsterdam bookseller Isaak Tirion. Most of the maps are based on Guillaume de L'Isle. The title-page dated 1744 refers to the second edition. But on advice of the publisher the atlas owners inserted later published maps behind the dated title-page. The index sheet with 114 map numbers indicates that this owner continued to insert maps until 1769, date present on the map of Canada (n° 113). Different from the fifth edition described by Koeman are : (1). the addition of maps n° 4 ("Reistocht rondom de wereld") and n° 93 ("De Papoasche Eilanden"); (2). numbers 64 and 65 of the index, initially blank, were filled with handwritten map titles ("Nederkwartier & Montfoort [...]" and "Eemland & Overkwartier"). These small differences turn this exemplar into an authentic testimony of Tirion's atlas production.
