Description
Basilea, (excudebat Henricus Petri), 1542 ([- mense Martio 1549]). 4 parts in 1 vol. in-f° : [36]-214, 3/287-[1 bl.], 3/221-[1 bl.], [2]-170-[1] pp. (s6 of part I and AA of parts II and III missing, upper margin of title-page repaired with loss of handwritten provenance, some marginal dampstains and tears, 1 reinforced, stains, handwritten notes, part of the 1st line of p. 157 crossed off). Contemporary emblazoned binding : calf, gilt arms on the boards dated 1751 on the upper one, gilt ribbed spine, gilt edges (very small parts of the spine repaired, some scratches incl. on the coat-of-arms of lower board, label on the inside of upper board). FIRST EDITION of Eusebius' famous works on the superiority of the Christianim over all pagan religions, the personality of Jesus Christ, history (of Church and the world from Abraham to Constantine) and Apollonius of Tyana (considered in the 4th cent. as Jesus Christ). Eusebius (c. 263-339), historian, exegete, Christian polemicist and scholar Biblical canon, became bishop of Cesarea in 314. He is considered as the father of Church History as his writings are very important for the first three centuries of Christianity. VERY NEAT typography and VERY FRESH copy opening on a typographical title surrounded by a woodcut frame figuring the Evangelists, Saint Pieter and Saint Paul on the sides.
