Coloniae, ex officina Melchior Novesiani, 1540. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-f° (text n.c., slightly browned, some marginal dampstains in the beginning, some marginal handwritten notes, marginal tears, some repaired or reinforced, lower corner of the Index 1st page lacking). 18th century binding : half sheepskin, brown marbled paper boards, gilt ribbed spine, red edges (trimmed, rubbed joints, some scratches at the back board, marks of provenance on the upper board and flyleaf). VERY RARE REUNION of the doctrinal works of the French monk Cassian (360/365-433/435) and the Syrian monk John Climacus or John Sinaites (from the 5th or the 6th century), both considered as Saint by the Catholic and the Orthodox Churches. Translated and with the commentaries by Denis the Cartusian (1402-1471), famous Belgian theologian and mystic called the "Doctor extaticus". Treatises explaining how to reach perfection : (1). Cassian's about the monastic life and obstacles a monk has to fight (anger, avidity, vanity...), his memories of Egypt and dialogues with the Desert Fathers,- (2). Climacus' on the 30 years of the Christ hidden life to resume the monastical experience and to reach the perfection in 30 "gradus". The second part of the volume contains the commentaries of Denis the Cartusian on the famous treatise of Climacus.
NEAT TYPOGRAHY with initial letters, some large figuring cherubs, and Novasianus' mark on title-page by Anton Woensam (1492/1500-1541), famous German painter and wood-engraver.

Rare réunion des ouvr. doctrinaux de Cassien et Climax, donnés par Denys le Chartreux. Jolie typographie avec larges initiales figurant des chérubins et marque de l'éditeur par Anton Woensam. Demi-basane du 19e s. (défauts, éraflures au plat inf., joints frottés).
