Description
Parisiis, expensis[que] Johan[n]is Parvi, Engleberti de Marnef, Ambrosii Gerault, ac Johan[n]is Kaerbriand alias Huguelin (ex ede Johannis Kaerbria[n]d), (kal. Juniis) 1527. 4 parts in 1 vol. in-32° : [22]-lxxx, clvi, [8], cxix [i.e. cxvi] lvs (tear and margin repaired in the title-page, copy slightly yellowed, small marginal tears, dampstains, tear with lack of text in the last lf., 1 lf. of 1st part unbound). 17th century binding : black calf on wooden boards, blind fillets encircling the boards, flat spine, blue edges, brass clasps (slightly used, 1 clasp lacking). ONLY COPY KNOWN of this cistercian breviary printed on 2 columns in red and black. Title, 4 woodcut illustrations (King David, Annunciation (twice) and Pentecoste) and some initials coloured and heightened with gold. With a part of a liturgical calendar (lim. lf. C6 r°/v°).
BOUND WITH, 3 lvs : 2 handwritten with Easter dates from 1622 till 1642 (between lim. lvs B2/B3),- 1 printed with a 17th cent. prayer (between lvs lii and liii).
Provenance : "obit Philipe (sic) de Ruijchrock 16(??)" (handwritten mention on liminary lf. A5).
# Not in STC French, USTC, Adams, Bohatta who lists cistercian breviaries by Marnef (1506 and 1508, 8°; 1516, 32°), Petit (1510, 4°) or by both (1512, 8°) and by Kaerbriand (1519, 1521 and 1535, 8°) but none with the address, date and format of our copy.
Seul exemplaire connu de ce bréviaire cistercien, imprimé en noir et rouge, comportant 1 titre orné et 4 vignettes sur bois rehaussés de couleurs et d'or. Veau noir du 17e s. (1 fermoir manquant).
