Description
Antverpiae, ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1577. In-8° : [16]-95 pp. (dampstains on upper corners, marginal tear repaired on title-page, copy very slightly browned, some holes or marginal tears). 19th century binding : threequarter marbled calf, veined paper boards, flat spine with gilt roll-stamps and red leather label, yellowed edges with red sprinkles (edges partly rubbed, upper joint split on 5 mm, small wears). FIRST EDITION of the Latin poems by Hillesheim and second issue of the collection of 39 representations of personages of the Old Testament by Jan Sadeler after Crispijn van den Broeck and Pieter van den Borcht (1st issue : 1575). Illustrated also with the author's portrait, German humanist and mayor of Adernach (1514-1575). Some successive mistakes were made during the printing of the edition. The presses were stopped to correct them but several erroneous copies were already distributed.
