8°, frontispice dépliant, XLIX-196-[2]-1 blanche, 8 planches dont 7 dépliantes d'après Ovenden, pastiche de reliure ancienne en veau blond moucheté, dos à nerfs entièrement décoré (qq. accrocs en tête de qq. p., qq. taches, très légères brunissures, 1 planche rognée court). First edition of Olivier's Fencing familiarized, with the text in English and French juxtaposed. « The work is very sound, and thoroughly justifies its French title, as it contains a simplified system, shorn of all unnecessary and obsolete details » (Thimm). The frontispiece shows the interior of a fencing classroom, with an ongoing exersize between two students, closely followed by the master himself sitting in a chair, by a group of other students at the left and by some spectators standing outside looking through the windows (Thimm, p. 210 ; Vigeant, p. 97 ; Pardoel, 1945 ; Castle, Schools and Masters of Fence, p. XLIX and p. 218 ; cf. En garde, 58, listing the second edition also published by Bell in London, in 1780).
