Description
manuscript on vellum and paper, c. 14,4 x 9,8 cm, very nice and clear cont. panelstamped calf over wood (sl. rubbed), covers with panel stamp of St. Servatius with Maastricht stars, spine on 4 raised bands, metal clasps and catches, 24 vellum ff. bound among 436 paper ff. (incompl. at end), expertly written in black/brown ink, 23-24 ll. In very good condition (some central quires def. at top because of damage probably caused by a bullet). Contents : a voluminous collection of some very rare Middle Dutch prayers including i.a. "Dat roesengertten", the "Hundert Betrachtungen und Begehrungen" by Henricus Suso, a Marian Psalterium and Litany, a text by Jacobus van Gruitrode etc. Decoration : rubricated throughout in red; numerous 2- and 3-line initials; over 40 larger initials in red and blue with penwork decoration; marginal penwork decoration (incl. human faces) on some vellum ff.; some penwork decoration in rectangular border strips. Provenance : on verso of lower flyleaf “Bidt voor suster Anneken | Belhem die dit bouck | heeft laten schriue(n) ende bekostichet” (17th c.?), on f.[2]r in pen "Anna Maria | Dierna | M. E. Tielens" (A.M. Dierna, d. 1733, was prioress of the Hasselt Witte Nonnen); on f. [1]v in pencil "Zerezo de Tejada" [Laakdal]; loosely inserted funeral devotional engraving for "Maria-Elisabetha Paulz, Zonhoven 1741-1822" and her husband "Philippus-Jacobus Tielens, Zonhoven 1730-1806".
