In-8° : [95]-[1 bl.] lvs (slightly but uniformly browned). Conremporary binding over wooden boards : calf, boards with 2 different blindstamped panels figuring biblical scenes within frames of lines and floral roll-stamps with portrait medaillons (decorated spine and brass clasps renewed, small professional restorations at the lower edges of the boards). Sixth Cologne-edition (princeps : 1555) of the "Dance of Death" with 55 fine woodcuts by Antonius Sylvius (c. 1555-1599; his monogramme on B2 and B3) based on the original Lyonese series after Hans Holbein the Younger. Each woodblock with a Biblical caption and an emblematic 4-line thematic commentary by Georgius Aemilius. The second part contains the moral treatise "Medicinae animae", prayers, reflexions and sermons on death by Cyprian of Carthage, Caspar Huberinus, Urbanus Rhegius and John Chrysostom.
VERY FINE, DATED (1574) AND WELL PRESERVED CONTEMPORARY PANEL-STAMPED BINDING figuring the Annunciation to the Virgin (front) and Christ's Baptism (rear) with latin text on 2 lines at the bottom of each panel (7,1 x 4,1 cm; "Virgo Maria Dei Ma//ter Sanctissimis Sal" and "Hic est Filius Meus//Dilectus In Quo Mi"). Richly decorated frames with portrait medaillons between floral ornaments.

Réédition de la "Dance des Morts" composée de 55 bois par Sylvius d'après Holbein, chacun avec une citation biblique et un petit commentaire. Le tout suivi par un traité moral, des oraisons, prières et sermons consacré au même sujet. Magnifique reliure de l'époque (datée 1574), ornée de 2 plaques à froid (l'Annonciation à Marie et le Baptême du Christ) sertis d'encadrements à roulettes avec petits portraits en médaillon, très bien conservée (dos et fermoirs refaits).
