Estimation : 120 / 150
Adjudication : 450 €
Description
Copper-engraving, TC 25,5 x 34 cm + margins (folds, small lacks in the margins, brown spots).
Double hemisphere world map, decorated with six allegorical female figures typically representing Day and Night and the four elements.
With California misconceived as island, a famous cartographic error in the 17th and 18th century.
The original world map by Arnold Colom had been reduced to pocket-size by the engraver Jacob van Meurs. J.L. Gottfried included the smaller map in his "Historische Chronyck [...]" whereafter Pieter van der Aa reissued it with his own imprint. Instead of the french title "Nouveau Carte du monde" in the cartouche on the righter hemisphere, this map shows the Dutch inscription "Nieuwe werelt caert".
