In-f° : [6]-cviii lvs; 2 (of 3) pl. (copy slightly browned, foxing, numerous on 2 lvs, rare lvs slightly soiled, stains mostly light and in the margins except for lvs 85-89 very stained). 18th century (?) temporary binding in coarse paper.
FIRST EDITION of this treatise on gnomonics by Andreas Schöner (1528-1590), son of the famous mathematician Johann Schöner.
Deals with horology, the construction of sundials on flat and curved surfaces, the manufacture of astrolabes, how to determine longitude without using a mariner's compass, etc. Illustrated with 2 (of 3) folding plates, about 200 woodcuts in the text or some full-pages representing diagrams, geometric figures, sundials and related instruments.
Title in black and red with an elaborate head-piece, initials figuring cherubs (one large on leaf 1) and Vom Berg & Neuber's device on the back of last leaf.
