Description
4 vol. small in-8° : [48]-314, 303-[1], 295-[1], [251 (of 252)] lvs (last blank lf. of vol. 4 missing, tears mainly marginal repaired except one small in the anchor of vol. 3, a few lvs lightly browned, some foxing, marginalia, light dampstains more often marginal, title-page of vol. I browned and doubled with tears restored, wormholes in the last 2 lvs of vol. 3 and the beginning of vol. 4, handwritten provenances on the 2 first title-pages, some partly erased or crossed off).
18th century binding : half calf, marbled paper boards, gilt decorated ribbed spine with red and green morocco labels, red sprinkled edges (small wears, joints of 3 vol. partly split, lack at one upper turn in, flyleaves renewed).
FIRST ALDINE EDITION "rare" when complete of the 4 volumes (cfr Renouard), printed by Paulus Manutius except the last probably by the Sabbio's who worked for the Torresani family.
The last volume contains an extended index. With Aldine's anchor on the the title-pages and last leaves; text of vol. II entirely encircled with red pencil.
Provenance : Antonius van Bellingen (1806-1882), merchant from Antwerp who bought the set at the auction (February, 1872) of the library of the Marquis Joachim Gómez de la Cortina Morante (1808-1868), rector of the university of Paris (handwritten mention and note).
