RARE COLLECTION. FIRST EDITION of "De Ephemera Britannica, liber unus" and second edition of the "De medendi methodo" (1st ed. : Basel 1544).
The first was written after Caius had witnessed the outbreak of the sweating sickness, highly contagious disease which struck England, and later Europe, in a series epidemics from 1485 until 1551. Caius's description of the symptoms is the classical account of this sickness.
"De medendi methodo" gives a method of teaching history. However, this copy doesn't contain Caius' translation of Galen's works.
Illustrated with a portrait of the author, aged 43, on the title of "De Ephemera", ornemental initials and printer's mark on title-page. Caius (1510-1573), studied at Gonville Hall in Cambridge and in Padua under Montanus and Vesalius.
His works are still of value for the precision of his observations and were often reprinted.
