William-Eleazar Pickwick was the nephew of the famous Eleazar Pickwick (1749-1837) who inspired Charles Dickens's first novel "The Pickwick Papers", published in feuilleton in 1836-1837, which made his name a household word. On Eleazar's death his estate was inherited by William-Eleazar, except for the coaching business. "His successors, perhaps to erase memories of the foundling, and of Dickens's eccentric characters, and having obtained a grant of arms in 1838, abandoned the name of Pickwick about 1872 in favour of Sainsbury, which was acquired through marriage" (# Buchanan).
JOINT:
•an interesting letter signed by G.W. Beltz, from the Heraldic College, to Captain Pickwick, May 7th 1838, where the design of the coat of arms is fully detailed (1 little split).
