Description
Edinburgh and London, William Blackwood, 1855. In-8°; 8 pl. (text n.c., rare foxing). Contemporary binding : calf, boards with blind fillets and flower tool in the corners, upper board with gilt medallion in the center, ribbed spine with gilt fillets, sprinkled edges (upper joint partly split, last rectangular design lacking, small defects, corners dulled). FIRST EDITION of this work relating the journey, also in Canada, of the British diplomat Oliphant (1829-1855) in which he also describes the development of West America, thanks to industry and commerce, and the manners and costumes of Native Americans. As secretary, he helped Lord Elgin, Governor General of the Province of Canada, to negotiate a trade treaty between the US and Canada. Illustrated with 1 folding map, 7 plates and woodcuts representing Fond du Lac, little falls of Mississipi, St Paul, a papoose, etc.

Provenance : prize from The Edinburgh Angus club, instituted in 1841. Its aim was to encourage friendly intercourse among the members and the advancement of education in Angus (ex praemio signed by the president Keriot and medallion on upper board).
