Volney (1757-1820), French philosopher, orientalist and member of the Estates-General and of the National Constituent, lived for 3 years in America. In this work illustrated with 2 maps and 2 plates, he observes the geological and climate information and detailed his travels throughout the country. He was accused by John Adams' administration of being a spy sent to prepare for the reoccupation of Louisiana by France and then to the West Indies. He was consequently deported.
