Description
Gandavi, excudebat Cornelius Manilius, 1556. 1 (of 2) vol. small in-8° : [8]-815 pp. (title-page slightly browned, small marginal dampstain in the beginning, some foxing, rare marginal holes). 19th century binding : bradel full beige paper, flat spine with red leather label, red sprinkled edges (stained, lacks of paper, edges and corners strongly dulled). First volume containing 16 books (of 27) edited by Simon Grynaeus, of one of the first and influential history of England. The first edition, in-f°, was published in Basel in 1534 and covers events up to 1509. The humanist from Urbino, historian and diplomat Vergilio (1470-1555) spent most of his life in England, he was named bishop of Bath and Wells and Archdeacon of Wells. He is dubbed as "Father of English history". Printer's mark on the title-page and small ornemental initials.
