voyage en URSS avec le photographe Robert Capa. [Oliver BURGESS MEREDITH (1907-1997), acteur, ami de Steinbeck, sera une des victimes du maccarthysme, placé sur la liste noire du cinéma]. Il a reçu les lettres de Burgess avant de quitter Paris. Les Français sont un peuple immoral. Mais «Honest Jake Pfaff» a fait une très belle robe pour Gwyn [la seconde femme de Steinbeck]. Stockholm est une belle ville. On dit que Burgess va venir y jouer Winterset... Il part lundi pour la case de l'Oncle Joe [Joseph STALINE]. Il n'a aucune idée de ce qu'ils trouveront là-bas, mais espère que ce sera bien. CAPA est en bonne forme. Il est pour l'instant dans la campagne pour photographier des fermiers, et probablement des filles de fermiers. Il espère que la première de Burgess [Winterset à Dublin] sera un triomphe; il aurait aimé que ce soit sa propre pièce [The Last Joan, que Steinbeck va abandonner]. Il a passé deux jours à faire du bateau dans l'archipel, et a trouvé ça très bon. Les bateaux sont de belles choses. S'il a besoin de lui écrire, qu'il adresse à Joe Newman, au bureau du Herald Tribune à Moscou; on verra si ça passe.... He's leaving on Monday for Uncle Joe's [Joseph STALINE] hut. He has no idea what they'll find there, but he hopes it'll be good. CAPA is in good shape. He's out in the country right now photographing farmers, and probably farmers' daughters. He hopes that the premiere of Burgess [Winterset in Dublin] will be a triumph; he wishes it was his own play [The Last Joan, which Steinbeck will abandon].
