Description
Plantini, 1581 In-12, [*1]-[*6], [2 ff.], [**-**3], 780 pp., [2 ff. bl.], en latin et grec. Plein veau brun, dos à nerfs orné, pièce de titre d'origine en maroquin citron, gardes de papier marbré (reliure d'époque). Nouvelle édition augmentée (l'édition originale avait paru en 1531), la troisième chez Plantin avec le commentaire de Claude Mignault. Ornée de d'un titre-frontispice gravé et de 211 figures gravées sur bois, dans le texte. André Alciat est le premier auteur de livre d'emblèmes, genre qui connut grâce à lui une fortune considérable. Notre édition propose 211 emblèmes (le dernier chiffré par erreur CCXIII). PROVENANCE Ex-libris manuscrit à l'encre brune sur feuillet ajouté, en allemand, qui mentionne Alfred Grenser de Leipzig (malheureusement à moitié déchiré et donc partiellement lisible); trace d'un ex-libris découpé dans la garde. (Reliure usagée: dos abîmé, pièce de titre en majorité absente sans affectation dans la lecture du titre, forts épidermures et frottements; mouillures, notamment une mouillure marginale n'affectant pas le titre-frontispice et fragilisant le papier en gouttière). Full brown calf, spine ribbed, original lemon morocco title coin, marbled endpapers (period binding). New enlarged edition (the original edition had appeared in 1531), the third at Plantin's with commentary by Claude Mignault. Decorated with an engraved title-frontispiece and 211 woodcut figures in the text. André Alciat was the first author of emblem books, a genre which, thanks to him, made a considerable fortune. Our edition offers 211 emblems (the last one mistakenly numbered CCXIII). PROVENANCE Ex-libris handwritten in brown ink on an added page, in German, which mentions Alfred Grenser of Leipzig (unfortunately half torn and thus partially legible); trace of an ex-libris cut out of the guard. (Used binding: spine damaged, title piece mostly missing without affecting the reading of the title, strong skin and rubbing; wetness, especially a marginal wetness that does not affect the title-frontispiece and weakens the paper in the gutter).
