Formé de quatre traités indépendants, écrits au XVe siècle par Thomas A. Kempis, chanoine régulier de la congrégation de Windesheim, ce livre de piété reçut ce titre, De Imitatione Christi.
Ouvrage majeur de la dévotion moderne destiné à promouvoir l'oraison individuelle, la lecture méditative des écritures, le détachement et le mépris du monde, il connut plus de 4000 éditions en 90 langues.
