américain, fonda en 1940, à Marseille, le Comité américain de secours qui aida des milliers de réfugiés, juifs, antinazis et surréalistes, dont Max Ernst, à quitter l'Europe.]
La lettre est numérotée en six points (de first à sixth), probablement en réponse à une demande ou un questionnaire de Varian Fry.
D'abord, mille remerciements à Varian et à Bénéditte [Daniel Bénédite (1912-1990), résistant qui assista Varian Fry et lui succéda, et habitait à la villa Air-Bel avec les surréalistes réfugiés à Marseille] pour leurs «affidavits [attestations]. They are first class documents»...
Deuxièmement, il est heureux d'apprendre son rétablissement ; d'expérience, il sait que c'est surtout une question de patience : «as I myself have been through the same experience not long ago, I knew, that after the first shock itw as only a question of patience». Il va aller de mieux en mieux...
Troisièmement, il n'a pas reçu de réponse de PICASSO.
Quatrièmement, il avait peur, en lisant la lettre d'Annette, que Varian ne commette une erreur terrible, au premier choc. Il est soulagé depuis la lettre reçue aujourd'hui. M.Th. fut certainement son ange gardien («gardan angel»)...
Cinquièmement, au diable pour Otto DIX («to hell with Dix»).
Sixièmement, qu'il se soigne et qu'il n'oublie pas qu'il a un bon ami nommé Max Ernst : «take good care of yourself, and do not forget that you have a good friend named Max Ernst».

[Varian FRY (1907-1967), American journalist, founded the American Relief Committee in Marseilles in 1940, which helped thousands of refugees, Jews, anti-Nazis, and Surrealists, including Max Ernst, to leave Europe]. — The letter is numbered in six points (from first to sixth), probably in response to a request or questionnaire from Varian Fry. — First, a thousand thanks to Varian and Bénéditte [Daniel Bénédite (1912-1990), a Resistance fighter who assisted and succeeded Varian Fry, and lived at the Villa Air-Bel with the refugee Surrealists in Marseille] for their "affidavits [attestations]. They are first class documents"... Secondly, he is happy to learn of his recovery ; from experience, he knows that it is above all a question of patience : "as I myself have been through the same experience not long ago, I knew, that after the first shock itw as only a question of patience".
