«Ma chère Maman,
Vos doutes sur l'avenir ne me produisent pas une impression trop désastreuse, étant donné les misères que je vois. Les Pascal (CECI ENTRE NOUS) ne s'en iront de Soulac qu'expulsés. Ils doivent leur hôtel et pension. [...] Je pense qu'alors la famille n'aura pas le cynisme de les laisser poursuivre et condamner et qu'on évitera à ma pauvre tante la honte de la correctionnelle. Voilà mon impression sans fard. Avouez que nous aurions mauvaise grâce de gémir.
- Le comble est que Louis est tombé malade de crampes nerveuses, et qu'après un repos d'un mois à St Gratien chez le brave Gaston la compagnie sera obligée de lui acheter une machine à écrire. Tout ceci n'est pas une blague. Bourges a fait contrôler par des gens compétents, et j'ai bien peur que le pauvre bougre ne devienne tout à fait impotent ; ça vous fera une dame de compagnie. Enfin il vaut mieux ne pas trop noircir l'avenir, qui l'est assez naturellement et sans teinture additionnelle». Il viendra à Malromé vers le 25 avec ses amis Viaud et Fabre, et demande qu'on prépare des logements. «Dites-moi comment faire aussi pour boire et manger. Fabre voudrait voir le pays et est ami de l'acquéreur de Respide. Je ne peux pas lui refuser ça il est trop gentil»...

Je l'y conduirai moi-même. Tout va donc comme vous le désirez. Dépêchez-vous d'en finir et donnez-moi des ordres»...

[Taussat] 13 September. "My dear Mother, Your doubts about the future do not produce too disastrous an impression on me, given the miseries I see. The Paschals (this is us) will only go away from Soulac expelled. They owe their hotel and board. [...] I think that then the family will not have the cynicism to let them be prosecuted and convicted, and that my poor aunt will be spared the shame of the correctional system. That is my unvarnished impression. You must admit that it would be ungracious of us to moan. - The worst thing is that Louis has fallen ill with nervous cramps, and that after a month's rest at St Gratien with the good Gaston the company will be obliged to buy him a typewriter. All this is not a joke. Bourges has had competent people check him out, and I am afraid that the poor fellow will become quite impotent ; that will make you a lady's companion. Finally, it is better not to darken the future too much, which is naturally enough and without additional dye.
