1928 la Villa Mirenda à Scandicci, près de Florence ; il y a écrit L’Amant de Lady Chatterley, qu’il fait imprimer à Florence en 1927, alors qu’il travaille à ses Croquis étrusques (Sketches of Etruscan Places) dont il parle dans cette lettre.] Il remercie son amie pour l’invitation de vendredi ; mais cette semaine, ils doivent s’occuper de leurs deux amis américains du Nouveau-Mexique [George Robert Graham CONWAY et son épouse]. Il va se renseigner sur d’autres villas. Le Villino La Massa serait trop exigu pour son amie, une petite maison de sept pièces, minuscule, mais tout près de chez lui. S’il continue son travail, ils resteront jusqu’à fin juillet, puis ils partiront en août et septembre. Elle sera alors la bienvenue dans la villa, mais il la prévient : pas de lumière, eau de pluie à pomper, sanitaires rudimentaires, tout très rudimentaire – linge juste en calicot, lits durs, etc. Il va se renseigner sur autre chose… « You didn’t then find anything in Vallombrosa? – Many thanks for the invitation on Friday: but this week we’re having to look after our two American friends from New Mexico. I’ll ask about other Villas here. The Villino La Massa would be too poky for you, I’m afraid: poky little rooms: a little 7-roomed cottage, tiny: but just near here. If I go on with my work I’m doing, we shall be here till end of July – then go away August & September. You’re perfectly welcome to the place, but all your complaints hold good here: no light, rainwater to be pumped up, sanitary arrangements primitive, the whole thing very rough – linen just calico, beds hard, etc. Such as it is, however, you are welcome to it for August & September.
