Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was a German composer of the early Romantic period. He wrote many songs, both for solo voice and for duet with piano, mainly simple or slightly modified strophic settings. This collection includes songs for solo with piano. We join : Id. - Scherzo, from a Midsummer Night's Dream, for the piano forte. London, Metzler & C., s.d., folio, sewn, spine in cloth, 11 pp. (title somewhat soiled). Purely instrumental movement of Mendelssohn's well-known music composed for Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream". The Scherzo is part of the incidental music which Mendelssohn wrote in 1842 for a production of the play. It has a sprightly score and acts as an intermezzo between acts I and II. It leads directly into the first melodrama, a passage of text spoken over music. Ownership entry on title. (2 vol.)
