Orchestral score of Rossini's final work written late in his career after a period of inactivity of 12 years. Rossini (1792-1868) began the work in 1831 but did not complete it until 1841. Initially he used his own librettos and compositions for a portion of the work and asked Giovanni Tadolini (1789-1872) to complete it. However, under pressure of his publisher in Paris, Rossini finished the work himself after 10 years replacing Tadolini's work with music of his own. The first performance in Paris (1842) became a great success.
