New ed., in smaller format (1st 1842-1849, 3 folio vol.) of Roberts' monumental iconographic work on some Near East countries. Ill. (complete) with 250 attractive plates reproduced photographically at smaller size (n. 1-250), most on tinted ground, some in colours, incl. a portrait of David Roberts, 6 ill. titlepages and 2 maps. Parts 1-3 are devoted to Holy Land, 4-6 to Egypt and specially Cairo (in part 6). David Roberts (1796-1864) was a prominent Scottish Orientalist painter. He is specially known for a large series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours in the region (1838-1840). On his return to Britain, Roberts worked with the Tournai lithographer Louis Hague (1806-1885) to produce the lavishly illustrated plates of the "Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria" and "Egypt & Nubia series".
