“Drawing on nine years of field study and collecting, Lamarck (1744-1829) published a three-volume flora of France in 1778. Botany had become universally popular, and a wide public greeted his Flore françoise as a useful manual of identification. It did not adhere slavishly to the methods of the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus and won for Lamarck appointment to the Academy of Sciences, which at that time was restricted to 42 members” (Enc. Brit.). 9 folding engravings by Claude Fessard (8 ills, 1 table). Collector’s stamp.
