Description
(sl. rubbed), spine on 5 raised bands with gilt title piece (sm. def. at head & tail), decorative endpapers, [20]-240-[4] pp. (some spotting & staining). Good copy.
Rare ed. of a work on hieroglyphs, ascribed to Horapollo, a fictitious author, supposed to be an Egyptian. Ill. with 195 woodcut emblems (incl. repeats; woodcut on p. 110 pasted over blank space). “Kerver was the first to commission the emblematic woodcuts and to print the Horapollo text itself in the form of an emblem book” (Mortimer). This is the 1st illustrated ed. with text in Latin and Greek (in Garamond’s “Grec du roi”). Woodcut mark at the end.  Old bookpl. Raphaelis Mecenate.
