Protestant account of the “Jetzertragödie”. The Dominican Johann Jetzer (1483-1515), who claimed to have been instructed by the Holy Virgin on her Immaculate Conception, and who had already fiercely attacked the Franciscans on this doctrine, in 1509 denounced 4 of his fellow friars as sorcerers and heretics. They were publicly burnt at Bern on 31 May 1509. The memory of these atrocities had a great influence on the growth of the Reformation in Switzerland. Johann Stumpf (1500-1578), a former priest, was an early Swiss Reformer and historian. Woodcut mark on title.
