taille-douce. 1684-1685Paris,D. Thierry,3 vol., 8vo, cont. calf (rubbed, some waterstains), richly decorated gilt (faded) spines (def. tail of vol. III, sl. splitt. front joints, sl. bumped corners), red lether title labels, sp. edges, [26]-363-[5], [14]-341-[3], [6]-387-[8-1 bl.] pp. (some minor marg. waterstains, waterstain in 1st quire of vol II, sm. part of margin of 1st ff. neatly cut off, paperflaw). Good copy.
2nd enlarged and revised ed. (1st 1671) of this profusely illustrated military treatise on war and military engineering by the French military engineer and cartographer A. Manesson-Mallet (1630-1706). With 3 front. and more than 400 nice engravings showing small maps and panoramical views of European towns i.a. Douay, Arras, La Rochelle, Brest, Ath, Lisbon, Breda, Madrid, Barcelona, Geneva, Naples, Paris, Speyer, Venice, Crete, etc., fortifications, military equipment & costumes, battle formations etc. In the 5 first parts the author deals with the fortication in general, the various methods of fortification, building techniques, "gens de guerre & de leurs évolutions"; the 6th part deals with the "Milice des Turcs", with strongholds in Hungary, Albania etc. and a view of the siege of Vienna.
