Maze]], (ex typographia d'Hautel), [1815 [1820]]. 6 (of 14) vol. large in-f° : TEXT : 2 (of 7) vol.— PLATES : 4 vol. containing 401 (of 413) plates protected by tissue guards (of 7 vol. totalising 714 plates) (defects : text : vol. I, III, V, VI and VII lacking.— Plates : vol. V, VI, VII and 12 plates in vol. IV lacking but complete of the plate "332 (2)". Vol. of plates slightly yellowed, mould at the upper corners of vol. I and at rare margins of vol. II, rare tears in the tissue guards, foxing mostly at the text vol.). Contemporary binding : half or threequarter green shagreen, boards of green shagreened cloth encircled with a gilt fillet and gilt coat-of-arms in the center, gilt decorated ribbed spines (rubbed at some places, spines +/- faded, mould or dampstains on the upper board of vol. II, some corners strongly dulled).
First edition of the text and first issue of the plates. Third section of the "Voyage aux régions équinoxiales du nouveau continent [...]" by the geographer and explorer Humboldt (1769-1859), containing and describing numerous plants collected by the last and the botanist Aimé Bonpland (1773-1858), compiled by Carl Sigismund Kunth (17881850). The complete edition, published from 1815 to 1825, is illustrated with 714 plates. Luxury copy (an in-f° and an in-4° editions were published of which most copies are in black) illustrated with 401 (of 413) nice hand-coloured etchings (except a few rares), some partly heightened with arabic gum. # Nissen, BbI, 954; # Pritzel 4333 (mentions 312 pp. in the vol. IV of text, ours is in 247 pp. but seems complete). ▲ Provenance : Prosper-Louis, duke of Arenberg (1785-1861), colonel of the Belgian "Chevau-légers" which fought in the Peninsule War (emblazoned supra libros; # de Jonghe d'Ardoye 645). fl Édition originale de 2 (sur 7) vol. de texte et premier tirage des 401 (sur 403) eaux-fortes rehaussées (sauf qqs-unes). Demi-chagrin ou demi-chagrin vert à coins (manquent 12 pl. au 4e vol.; pl. lég. jaunies, dos +/- passés).
