Description
Publisher's binding : blue cloth, upper boards with identical gilt pictorial stamp by Aubrey Beardsley, lower boards with in the center Pan monted on Pegasus in gilt, flat spines with gilt title and stamp (minimal traces of use otherwise in fresh condition). Complete set of the 8 numbers of this famous Art Nouveau literature and art magazine. Periodical abundantly illustrated, mainly by Aubrey Beardsley, the Art director, featuring texts and poems by Yeats, Beardsley himself, Conrad, Beerbohm, etc. The review, founded as a competitor to The Yellow Book, stopped after eight numbers as it was not a financial success. The final number was wholly written by the editor Arthur Symons. Complete of : all the upper covers printed in black on white paper,- all the title-pages (the two first being similar and those of n° 3-8 figuring Pan monted on Pegasus),- 1 (of 8) lower covers with the small vignette of the publisher,- n° 2-8 printed on vellum paper,- advertisements at the end of n° 2-8. Without : the Christmas card in n° 1 usually missing,- the pp. 199-204 containing the covers of n° 1 & 2 "for the convenience of such suscribers as desire to bind up "The Savoy" into volumes [...] which may be bound in, in substitution for the pink cardboard covers" (# Publisher's note). # The Turn of the Century, n° 34 ("The Savoy is perhaps the most mature and consistent periodical to express the literary and artistic culture of the Nineties in England"). ^ Revue complète en 8 numéros abondamment illustrés principalement par Aubrey Beardsley (sans la carte de Noël au n° 1 qui manque souvent, sans les couv. des n° 1 & 2 destinés aux adhérents voulant faire relier la revue et sans 7 (sur 8) plats inf. des couv. illustrés de la vign. d'éditeur). Pleine toile bleue décorée d'édition (bonne condition).
