Description
with blind stamp and three gilt floral medallions, flat spine entirely gilt decorated, pastedowns and flyleaves with Arabic ornaments with Arabic script by Pog^ny, gilt top edge (light traces of use). Illustrated with 24 watercolours in reproduction mounted on a full-page encircled with a fine decorated border. The 75 rub^iy^t, corresponding to the first rendering of Fitzgerald (1809-1883), are printed in a dark brown cursive typography in Arabic style ornamented with various coloured decorations. Printed on pages encircled by an ornamental frame of which the recto contains the number of the poems in a vignette. Unnumbered edition on tinted vellum with the introduction of Lowell paying tribute to Fitzgerald in stringing Khayyam pearls "on an English thread". The prolific Hungarian illustrator Pog^ny (1 882- 1 955), well-known for his ink and pen drawings of myths and fables, gave his first interpretation of the work of Khayyam in 1909. His illustrations are contained in several editions by many publishers (Harrap, Crowell...), this undated copy is probably part of the first. • Illustrations completely different from the following edition (n° 388). ^ Illustré de 24 planches en couleurs et orné de nombreux décors et encadrements en couleurs dans le style Arabe.
