Description
(copy with some pp. unopened). Contemporary binding : turquoise straight grained morocco, upper board with gilt medallion presenting coloured calf floral onlay, ribbed spine, gilt top edge. Under box (some damages). Illustrated with 1 2 watercolours (incl. frontispiece) in reproduction mounted by the upper board (captions in the table of illustrations). The 1 76 rub^iy^t (75 from the first rendering of Fitzgerald and 1 01 from the fourth) printed in black Roman type are decorated with head-pieces of which 45 in triptych with in the center a reproduction on vellum (some repeated), 1 black engraving on the half-title, 2 black full-pages, ornemental tail-pieces of various sizes, borders and title on ocher background encircled with black decorated frame. Issue to 1 .550 copies (750 for England, 500 for the United States), copy n° 366 signed by Pog^ny of the English issue, with : -an etching by Pog^ny, 16,9 x 12,4 cm, signed by the artist in pencil and protected by a tissue guard, offering another interpretation of the frontispiece. Pog^ny (1882-1955), well-known for his ink and pen drawings of myths and fables, gave his first interpretation of the work of Khayyam in 1909. His illustrations are contained in several editions by many publishers (Harrap, Crowell...). • Illustrations completely different from the preceding edition (n° 387). Nice binding. Joint : Rub^iy^t.
