condition (some minor spotting).
Impressive broadside “based on a painting of the 16th or early 17th c., glorifying the Jesuit fathers as directing both church and state, here used to discredit them and to justify their expulsion from the realm of France” (Newberry Library). The original painting was confiscated in Billom in 1762 and brought to Paris to serve as evidence against the Order. It is now in the Musée de l’Histoire de France (Hôtel de Soubise) in Paris. It shows “a galleon ship personifying Faith, presided over by Catholic Orders, with the Jesuits at the helm. The faithful are brought aboard from smaller ships. As it heads toward Salvation, the passengers must fend off the attacks of the deadly sins and heretics. One of the heretics has been identified as King Henri IV of France" (Getty Research Institute).
