Description
gilt label, red edges, [16]-237-[11] pp. (without portrait and plate Qqq; paper age-toned, some spotting, minor worming in blank inner and fore-edge margin, tear in bottom margin of **3, Ff4 and Gg1; tears (mended) in Aa3-4). Good copy.
1st ed. (1602-1680) of a major early work on China by the famous Jesuit polymath Kircher. Engr. ills : frontisp., 3 folding engravings incl. 2 maps and 21 (of 22) full-page and 59 half-page pl. “While one of his least original works, it was in many ways his most significant historically, being the first publication of important documents on oriental geography, geology, botany, zoology, religion and language” (Quaritch). With a list of Kircher’s writings at the end (33 nos). Title with engr. Jesuit device. Printed in 2 cols. Prize book given in the Latin School of Mol on 19 August 1785 to "Petrus Joannes Oste ex Lebbeke".
