Description
blindstamped losange panel on frontcover within blindstamped and gilt filet, gilt orn. spine on 5 raised bands, gilt dentelles on marbled endpapers, marbled edges, xvi-209-[1 bl.-1-1 bl.], viii-258-[3-1 bl.] pp. (occasional foxing due to the guards, as often). In general very good clean copy.
First ed. of this very fine work on the River Thames made by S. Ireland (1744-1800). Complete rare large paper copy with 52 (27 + 25) sepia aquatint illustrations. Each vol. contains before the printed title, a French title, a sepia-toned engr. title dated June 1791, an engr. map and several illustrative woodcuts in the text. Some pages facing the aquatints have a sl. offsetting, as usual. The tour along the Thames shows, with explanatory texts, famous sites such as Blenheim Castle, Christ Church and Magdalena Colleges in Oxford, Windsor Castle, Strawberry Hill, Eton College, Lambeth Palace etc.
