Description
4to, half calf, flat gilt orn. spines (crackled, spine of vol. 4 cracked, head & tail def., joints of vol. 2, 3, 5, 6, et 7 splitting), red leather title label, 575 pl. (72, 70, 73, 72, 72, 72, 72, 72). Used copy spotted throughout (esp. in vol. 7 & 8) sometimes affecting the pls, quire loose in vol. 6, min. tears in some (fold.) pl.
First edition. "The most important French flower periodical of its day" (J.J. White, in "Delectus Hunteriana" 26) started by de Launay (1750-1816) and continued after his death in 1816 by Deslongchamps (1774-1849). With in total 575 hand-coloured, tissue-guarded pl. with accompanying extensive, descriptive text leaves (the pl. numbers 171 & 172 have been used twice as listed in the Errata to vol. 3, pl. 199bis is a true bis-pl.). The plates are after the paintings by Pancrace Bessa (1772-1835) painter at the Museum National d'Histoire naturelle in Paris. The often lacking pl. 384 is here present as "Dianthus carophyllus" (Stafleu & Cowan only quotes 574 pl. and states that pl. 384 was never publ.). Index to the whole series in French and Latin present in vol. 8 as well as the list of subscribers. Among them are the kings of France, Spain, the emperors of Russia and Austria, etc.
