First ed. of this Dutch trsl. of the encyclopedical study of animals known at the time by the Polish scholar and physician J. Jonston (1603-1675), 1st published in Latin in 1657. Engr. ills by Mathäeus Merian : 4 titles and 250 pls. (80, 68, 62, 40) full-page numbered plates (with 3 of more animal ills each). At the end 3 pls with a nice variety of dragons. One of the most spectacular animal books from the 17th century showing elephants, a unicorn, a rhinoceros, cats and dogs, frogs, whales, mermaids, falcons and other birds of prey. Text in 2 cols.
