Description
with 1 metal fitting surrounded by single stamps, metal corner pieces, remains of clamps, spine on 5 raised bands (repaired), [24]-442-[28-2 bl.] pp. (lower right corner of title torn off and *2 repaired, edges of 1st quires frayed, tear in p. 1, somewhat spotting & dampstaining). Otherwise good copy.
1st ed. in 2nd issue of this very popular anatomical work by A. Du Laurens (1558-1609), physician of Marie de Medicis and King Henri IV. It contains descriptions of the structures, actions, and uses of the parts of the body, but also num. "controversies" in which are discussed disputed theoretical anatomical and physiological questions (based on earlier works of e.g. Abano). Prelim. poetry by Ianus de La Riviere, F. Rossetus, Richard Laurentius, etc. Engr. ills : title, portrait of Henri IV surrounded by "Iustitia" and "Prudentia" and 25 (of 26) full-page plates after Vesalius, Coiter, Varolio and Valverde.
