Honthorst & J.A. van der Marsce for the Commelin Press [Heidelberg], 4to, cont. goldtooled vellum (loosening at front, ties gone), covers with large gilt central ornament within ruled borders, spine titled in ink, a.e.g., [24]-259 (= 261)-[11] pp. (marg. toning and spotting, waterstains on 1st lvs., stain in centre of Kk2-Ll4). Good copy.
Rare praise of the Dutch language, with a humanist philological comparison to Latin, Greek and … Persian, by the Zeeland minister A. Van der Myle (1563-1637). With liminary verse by B. Vulcanius, D. Heinsius, P. Scriverius, P. Hondius. Woodcut mark on title. Dutch words in gothic type. On front flyleaf author’s presentation inscription to Christoph Sticke, Councillor of the Brandenburg Elector (and whose complimentary letter to Van der Myle is printed on c1r). Old name on title "Conr. Rademacher".
