2nd official ed. (1st 1671) of this military treatise by the French engineer and cartographer Manesson-Mallet (1630-1706). He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV, became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of fortifications. Engr. ills : 3 titles, portrait of Louis XIV, author’s portrait by P. Landry and 405 full-page numb. pl. (152 (= 156), 111 (= 112), 137) showing plans and panoramas of European cities, fortifications, etc. Contains chapters with information on the method of construction, the functions of the army, different ways to fortify, etc. and 1 chapter on “malice des Turcs”.  Bookpl.
