Description
de la mesme Histoire depuis la ruine du Péloponèse jusques à présent et des considérations sur icelle (...) par Artus Thomas, sieur d'Embry. 1650 Cramoisy, 2 vol., cont. calf (sl. rubbed), double gilt ruled border on covers, spines on 5 raised bands (splitting, corners repaired), [8]-907-[1 bl.-27] pp., [6]-196-[11-1 bl.] pp., [4]-89-[3] pp., 273 col.-[3 pp.], 116-[3] pp. (some browning and spotting; large, rather faint waterstain in 2nd vol. touching some pls, several pl. with tears : p. 808 in the 1st vol.; pls 28, 38, 57, 61, 97, 111 and p. 1 in the 2nd vol., some of the tears touching the pl., some of them underlaid or repaired with los of the picture).
Rare later collected ed. with additions by Th. Artus (first 1632) based on the French trsl. of the Latin text by Blaise de Vigenère. This ed. contains many further additions to the orig. text of Chalcondyles by François de Mezeray bringing the history up to date (1649) (Atabey). With 2 engr. titles (outside margins of both cut short), 1 map "La ville de Constantinople", 1 fold. pl. "Portraict de l'armée de l'empereur Turc rangée en bataille", 24 Sultan-portraits (19 in vol. I and 5 in vol. II) and 79 full page pl. (inspired by the 16th c. engravings in Nicolay's works) of which 68 depicting fine costumes of Turkish warriors, noble men, a turkish cook as well as local costumes of Malta, Adrianople, Alger etc. and 17 allegorical engr.
