Luchtmans, 1731, 4 vol., large folio, cont. goldtooled mottled calf (rubbed, sm. def. to heads and tails, joints starting to split, corners bumped), covers with gilt ornamental border and central decorative pattern with large oval central ornament and corner pieces, gilt spines on 8 raised bands, sp. edges, marbled endpapers, 3 parts: [28]-92-143-[1]-321-[1]-40-19-[1], [4]-604 (= 498)-[6]-230, [20]-924-[24] pp. (some spotting, sm. tears in plate margins, some mended). Good set.
Rare complete set of a major biblical encyclopedia by the French Benedictine scholar Calmet (1672-1757), translated by M. Gargon (1661-1728), and supplemented by the Dutch scholars J. van Ostade (1677-1745) and A.H. Westerhovius (1677-1738). Engr. ills : frontisp. by Ph. de Gunst, 160 maps, plans, views and plates by A. de Putter, F. van Bleyswyk, Ph. de Gunst etc. It covers all aspects of biblical history, geography and culture, including Jewish antiquities. On pp. 1-92 (vol. I) a “Gewyde boekzaal” (= extensive Bible bibliography). Titles in red and black. Printed in 2 cols. The nice decorated binding was made by the famous Amsterdam “Double drawer handle bindery” (see J. Storm van Leeuwen, Dutch decorated bookbinding, I:281).
