Collection of 7 very rare pamphlets on the immunities of the Gallican Clergy. 1. Extensive treatise by Bargeton (1678-1757), which was immediately forbidden in France and Rome. It is also one of the first works advocating equality on matters of taxation and pointing to the fact that the clergy has no real claims to being exempted of taxation. Ref. STCN (1: Cambridge). 2. Rare polemical text of Voltaire. “Fictitious imprint, printed in Paris by M. Lambert?” (STCN). Ref. STCN (i.a. BL, none in The Netherlands!). Bengesco 1609. 3. Probably a Paris ed. of the polemicial work by Beauvais (1731-1790). Ref. ESTC T166612 (Cambridge copy only!). 4. Small text by Voltaire. “Ecrit en réponse à divers articles des Nouvelles ecclésiastiques, dirigés contre la Défense de l’Esprit des lois par Montesquieu” (BnF). Ref. Cp. Bengesco 1607 etc. Not in STCN (has other ed. of 8 ff.). 5. Ref. Cp. BnF (various anonymous eds.). Not in BL, STCN. 6. Rare essay by Mirabeau (1715-1789). Ref. Cp. BnF (other eds.). Not in BL, STCN. 7. Rare pamphlet of Constantin (1710-?), later publ. as Le Baillon. Ref. Cp. BnF (other eds.). Not in BL, STCN.
