Description
1st ed. of the famous pamphlet by the French author Honoré-Gabriel Riqueti de Mirabeau (1749-1791). Engr. title with portrait of Jan de Witt. "It was under the influence of a number of Dutch exiles that Mirabeau, together with the team of writers he had working for him, composed his "Aux Bataves" (…) This highly intriguing text was meant to incite the Dutch to take up arms against the restored Orangist regime, but also clearly served a function in French political debate. With this early numeration of the rights of man, it was a direct precursor of the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1789" (Velema, "Republicans", 2007, pp. 20-21). Ref.
