Miniature - Mary in Heaven. Miniature by the Master of the Harley Froissart, [Paris, c. 1450-1460].

Description
Illuminated vellum leaf, aquarelle with tempera and gold leaf, c. 19,5 x 14 cm, decoration c. 16 x 13 cm. Expertly mounted under passe-partout, both sides visible (very minor loss of sm. pigments, a few tiny def.). In good condition. Nice miniature attributed to the Master of the Harley Froissart (BL), a Flemish illuminator of the Ghent-Bruges School, who was active in Paris c. 1450-1460. Attribution of his work made by John Plummer in “The Last Flowering” (Pierpont Morgan Library 1982). Recto: fully illuminated leaf showing Mary kneeling before God on his throne. Border decoration with strawberry shoots, a bird in each corner, a medallion with a choir of angels, and at bottom a person riding a snail. Text underneath (Ps. 84:5). Verso: border decorated with a medallion scene (Visitation), a bird, St Catherine of Alexandria, acanthus leaves, flowers, strawberry shoots. Text in centre: Ps. 69:2 & 12:1-4.
