Description
Glasgow, printed for the author by Robert and Andrew Foulis, sold by R. & A. Foulis, and A. Stalker at Glasgow; Kincaid & Bell at Edinburgh [et al.], 1763. 2 vol. in-4°; 1 (of 2) pl. (scattered foxing, good condition). Modern binding : brown fabric, ribbed spine with red leather labels, red sprinkled edges (small wears on the labels). The first volume contains the journeys from St Petersburg to Ispahan and from St Petersburg to China; the second volume from Bejing to St Petersburg with also accounts from Mr de Lange and of Bell's travels to Derbent and Constantinople. Illustrated with a folding map showing the route from Moscow to Bejing. With a contemporary letter pasted on the dedication in vol. I. The Scottish adventurer Bell (1691-1780) was the doctor of the Russian diplomat Artemy Petrovich Volynsky, appointed to the Persian embassy, and with whom he travelled from 1715 to 1718.
